たなしょう

Hello! My name is Sho Tanaka. You can call me Tanasho.(はじめまして!俺の名前は田中翔。たなしょうって呼んでくれ。)

ベッティ

Hello, my name is Betty. What is your name, and could you briefly tell us about yourself? (はじめまして、私はベッティ。まずは、簡単な自己紹介をお願いしてもいいかしら。)

Mr. Stewart

My name is Graeme Stewart. I was born and grew up in Melbourne, Australia but spent many years working in South Australia. These days I am teaching English part-time at a university in Sichuan, China.

たなしょう

オーストラリアで育ったのか〜。そういえば、オレ今度学校の修学旅行でオーストラリア行くんだよな。

ベッティ

へーそうなんだ!って、翔の話はいいから。もっと先生の話を聞きましょうよ。

たなしょう

あっ、ごめん、ごめん。

たなしょう

Mr. Stewart, may I ask you what inspired you to be a teacher at Best Teacher? (ベストティーチャーで働こうと思ったきっかけは何ですか。)

Mr. Stewart

Fortunately, I have a lot of free time, so I am able to enjoy my favorite pastime of cycling and also my interest in teaching English online. I really like that while the Skype lessons are mostly informal and fun, Best Teacher also offers correction and feedback on students’ writing. I believe Best Teacher has developed the best online experience for learners of English, and I am proud to be a tutor with them.

ベッティ

もともとオンライン英会話に興味があって、自由な時間が増えたことをきっかけにオンライン英会話で英語を教え始めたってわけね。

たなしょう

 多くのオンライン英会話の中でも、スピーキングレッスンに加えて生徒の書いたライティングの添削や評価をするベストティーチャー独自の英語学習サービスが気に入ったみたいだね。

ベッティ

I am glad to hear that you like to teach at Best Teacher. As a second question, I would like to ask you what you keep in mind during lessons as an online English teacher in order to improve students’ English skills?(オンラインで英会話レッスンをする際に意識していることや日本人生徒の英語力上達のために心がけていることはなんですか。)

Mr. Stewart

When we learn a foreign language, we often spend time learning new vocabulary but can be confused when to use these words. In our native language, our environment provides us with all the information we need to know if a word is formal or informal, appropriate or inappropriate. Our environment gives us the context that makes us fluent. I keep this in mind when talking to students online.

Mr. Stewart

During the online conversations, I am providing a native speakers’ environment for the student. When I am speaking to students online, I am providing examples of words and phrases used appropriately.

たなしょう

僕たちは生活する環境の中で自然と言葉の意味や使い方を理解して習得しているってことだね。

ベッティ

先生はそのネイティブな環境をレッスンの中で作り出しているんだって。

ベッティ

Could you give us an example from your teaching experience? (何かレッスンでのエピソードはありますか。)

Mr. Stewart

Recently, a student told me she was very ‘aggressive’ at work. After a little more conversation, I realized that a more appropriate word to describe her at work was ‘enthusiastic*’. It’s not a big mistake, but pointing out the difference in these words and providing some sentences with context was useful for her. Of course, the purpose of language is communication. If a student is able to communicate their ideas to me successfully, the student should feel justly proud of themselves even if they have made some grammatical or contextual mistakes.

*enthusiastic=「熱心な、熱狂的な」

たなしょう

レッスンで微妙なニュアンスの違いを指摘されることで、生徒自身も使える英語が学べそうだね。

ベッティ

そうね。私も日本語を勉強している時、少しの意味の違いで混乱することがあるの。けれど、他の人がその言葉を使っているのを聞いた時に、自然と正しい使い方を学んでいるんだと思う!

たなしょう

What do you think is the most important thing that students should keep in mind to improve their English? (英語学習で大切なことは何だと思いますか。)

Mr. Stewart

When learning a foreign language, it is best to surround ourselves with the language, to immerse* ourselves in it as far as possible. All content is useful: songs, TV shows, movies, books, magazines, advertisements etc. However, studies of language learning show us that the best content is the content that we are most interested in. What are your hobbies and interests? Is there anything you feel strongly about? When the topic is so interesting that you forget that you are actually operating in a foreign language, this is when you are really learning and acquiring the language.

*immerse=「熱中する、没頭する」

Mr. Stewart

With specific regard to speaking and listening skills, it is obviously very beneficial to spend time chatting with native speakers or fluent speakers. When this is not possible, remember to speak the words and phrases you are learning out loud. It is important to practice bringing new words and phrases from your memory to your mouth by speaking them aloud.

ベッティ

興味のあることだと「学ぶ」ことが楽しいから、英語だってことも忘れちゃうってことね!

たなしょう

確かに。僕は料理とか好きだから、英語の料理番組とかだと英語を意識せずに、ずっと見続けられると思う!

ベッティ

Here is your last question. Do you think students’ attitudes during lessons will affect their learning and development, and if so, how? (レッスン中の生徒の勉強に対する姿勢は英語力上達にどのように関わっていると思いますか。)

Mr. Stewart

Keep in mind that during the Skype lesson, you are talking to someone who knows far less about your life and culture than you do. The teacher’s lifestyle and culture might be very different. Things that might seem boring and mundane to you, can be very interesting to someone with a different life experience – how you commute to work, where you go shopping, the history behind an upcoming national holiday, the weather! All of these can be interesting topics for conversation.

Alright. This is the end of the interview, and thank you very much for your time, today. We wish you the very best. (今回はこれで終わりです。お時間いただきありがとうございました。これからも頑張ってくださいね!)

たなしょう

先生、今日は本当にありがとうございました!
